Unlike Mulroney, who at least could argue that John Turner and Pierre Trudeau loved deficits as much as he did, Harper's problems are of his own making. He inherited a healthy surplus. He inherited a smaller debt than Chretien or Martin. Harper simply chose to make unwarranted cuts and mismanage the surplus, which our Parliamentary Budget Officer informs us is the real reason for the government's current fiscal problems - NOT THE CREDIT CRUNCH.
