Measles and Mumps rear their ugly heads in Ontario

Doctors warn that measles, mumps going around - Healthzone.ca
I'm guessing that this is at least in part thanks to the ignorance spread by the anti-vaxxers.
If you aren't already immune, please get your shots to help protect yourself, your friends and family, and the public in general.

Excerpt:
If in doubt of your immunization status, get another needle, King advised. A blood test will also tell you if you’re protected.

“There is never any harm in receiving another dose of measles, mumps
and rubella vaccine if you simply do not know,” King said. Extra doses
are generally not considered harmful, she said.

Later this year the province is rolling out an integrated infectious
disease and immunization registry, called Panorama, which will compile
existing data and create a vaccination database accessible by health
professionals and, one day, the public. The project is expected to take
years, and eventually link to other provincial systems.

King called Panorama, related to the broader eHealth program, a
“really important advancement” in public health and emergency
preparedness.

To be fully vaccinated requires two doses of the measles, mumps and
rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is publicly funded and delivered for free
to Ontario residents. The province provides 14 vaccines against 17
illnesses. Those born before 1970 probably became immune to those
illnesses by exposure.

Measles is highly contagious, spread by contact, coughing and
sneezing. Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever and watery eyes.

Mumps, a viral infection of the salivary glands, is rare. Symptoms of
the mumps include swelling and pain in the side of the jaw, fever,
headache, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

World's leading medical journal finally admits that Wakefield was wrong - vaccines don't cause autism

Top medical journal pulls controversial autism study - Parentcentral.ca

The anti-vaccine movement lost steam Tuesday after the world’s leading medical journal officially retracted a controversial autism study that has caused millions of parents around the world to fear childhood vaccines.

The study, published in 1998 in the British journal the The Lancet was the first to report a purported link between a vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella and the onset of autism. That reported association, which has since been discredited, formed the crux for the argument that MMR vaccines can cause autism and many in the anti-vaccine movement used the paper as proof of their claims.

Experts say the rare move by the Lancet to pull a published paper should help to correct the public record, though many added that more work is needed to remove the publication’s harmful legacy.

“This sends a very strong signal this research is not to be believed,” said Paul Hebert, editor-in-chief of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. “For something that is published, taking it out of the public record is effectively saying it never existed.”

I'm glad I got my flu shots

1.5M Canadians off sick with flu in Nov. - Healthzone.ca
In comparison, the number of hours lost is much great than what is lost with just the regular seasonal flu
Gilmore said the last time the province documented such significant loss in hours was during the blackout in August 2003

The last time I had the flu I was off work for a week. Now that I am self employed, I really can't afford a week off.

Leukaemia vaccine being developed - Telegraph

British researchers have developed a treatment that can be used to stop the disease returning after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant.

Eventually it is hoped the drug, which activates the body's own immune system against the leukaemia, could be used to treat other types of cancers.

The Real Truth About Vaccinations

The real truth about vaccinations
I want you to imagine a medical product which can save and has saved many millions of lives, the majority of them children. Imagine that the procedure is safe (not 100%, absolutely safe, of course, because nothing is that) and has been used literally billions of times with only a small number of bad reactions. It is cheap and can be administered by people with almost no training. It is not very profitable for the pharmaceutical industry because research is expensive but the buyers are mainly governments and charities who are very cost conscious.

Medical Morons in the Age of Information

Bottom of the Glass: Medical Morons in the Age of Information
An interesting post about how a lot of people are believing in what a small number of "kooks" are claiming about vaccines.

We have people on both sides of the political spectrum who are railing against the swine flu vaccine. Celebrities who have no more medical training or knowledge than you, me, or the Keebler frappin' Elf are claiming that the vaccine is more dangerous than the flu it aims to prevent.

Children and H1N1

No matter what you do, children always get flu - Healthzone.ca
Read the link first.

So, it is good advice to get your kids vaccinated against the H1N1 this year, especially if your child is under 5 years (6 months to 5 years old) and especially if they have health issues that could make their systems react in a stronger more negative way to the H1N1 virus.

Vaccine was very unlikely to have caused the girl's death.

HealthZone.ca

LONDON – A British health official said Tuesday that the sudden death of 14-year-old girl was very unlikely to have been caused by the vaccine she was given hours before she died.

Natalie Morton, who died in a hospital Monday only hours after being the given the Cervarix vaccine, which protects against the virus that causes cervical cancer, had a "serious underlying medical condition which was likely to have caused death," according to Caron Grainger, the director for public health at Coventry City Council, the English city where the girl went to school.
